Nine are rescued from Labuan fire

Labuan: Nine victims, including two children, were rescued after one of the premises at the Lazenda Commercial Centre in Jalan Tun Mustapha, here, was razed at about 1.44pm on Monday.
Labuan Fire and Rescue Department Director Zainal Madasin said the department received a distress call about the premise, which supplied paper and provided printing services, had caught fire.
“Upon arrival, our personnel were informed that there were seven tenants living on the floor above the blazing premise and that they were trapped as the staircase was engulfed in flames and thick smoke,” he said.
“All seven, however, managed to escape to the roof of the building using a ladder pump belonging to a supermarket located beside the premise. From the rooftop, firemen successfully rescued the victims,” he added.
Meanwhile, the other two victims, who were employees of the premise, managed to escape unscathed before the fire spread.
Firemen were able to control the fire within an hour and 15 minutes.
The cause and losses of the fire, which caused 90pc damage to the premise, are under investigation. – Iffah Dilaney
